The examination is indicated if gastrointestinal bleeding is suspected, including the presence of bloody or black stools, or in cases of anemia. Endoscopic evaluation is likewise advised in the presence of unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite.

It is further recommended for individuals with a family history of gastrointestinal malignancies. Endoscopic examination may also be necessary following a positive screening result, such as a fecal occult blood test.

How to Prepare for the Examination

Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (Gastroscopy) – Preparation

Patients must refrain from eating for at least 6 hours prior to the examination and from drinking for at least 2 hours beforehand. An empty stomach is essential to ensure accurate visualization.

Colonoscopy – Preparation

Colonoscopy requires special bowel preparation, including dietary restrictions and the use of a prescribed laxative solution. Adequate bowel cleansing is essential for accurate and reliable results.
